THERE WEREN'T MANY chances to use the Golf in my first few weeks of ownership. Salt on the roads, time away for Christmas, lots more time away for work... all the usual excuses. But I'm determined to drive the Golf regularly, otherwise there really would have been little point to buying it.

A quick trip to a nearby village pub on New Year's Day was the proper first outing. The car felt great but the exhaust was vibrating annoyingly and the rear wiper proved to have a life of its own. A bit of Googling revealed that the wiper problem was almost certainly a broken live feed within the gaiter between the body and the tailgate, and sure enough that proved to be the case. Out with the soldering iron and the heatshrink insulation, and that's now fixed.
