YOU KNOW THOSE itches that you just have to scratch? They may go away for a while but often return, sometimes in a subtly different form. Usually, there's only one way to sort them out...

Well, my itch has always been Mks1 and 2 Golf GTIs. I love them. I've had four, maybe five if you count the Mk2 that my brother bought from Robert Coucher in the late 1990s, when Robert and I worked together in pre-Octane days. I drove that a few times so I reckon I can count it as part-ownership.

For the last three years at least I've been keeping an eye out for a good Mk1, then backing down because it's so galling that they're now £15,000-plus, which is at least ten times as much as I ever paid for one back in the day. But actually I never found one that was quite right.
