Smart #5 to be rough and ready off-roader

THE Beijing Motor Show kicked off last week, with the world's biggest brands battling for floor space at what's becoming one of the biggest dates in the automotive calendar. Smart was among them, teasing a brand new model due later this year.

- Smart's largest car will take firm into new part of the market
Smart is calling the #5 concept its "most spacious and versatile vehicle to date". It looks like a cross between a Mercedes GLB and a shrunken Land Rover Defender, albeit with some of the smooth, curved edges seen on Smart's existing #1 SUV.
The maker has delved deep into its theoretical off-road accessories brochure, fitting the concept with knobbly tyres, protective cladding and even a roof rack. The short front and rear overhangs should help if, or when, the going gets tough.
