Hyundai hatches new hybrid plans

AEX HYUNDAI has revealed its road map for the rest of the decade, focusing heavily on electrification – including next-generation hybrids and EVs, plus range-extender technology coming in 2027. More hot N models are on the way, too.

The plans were announced during Hyundai's 2025 Investor Day event, where President José Muñoz said the company's “multidimensional strategy ensures that we stay competitive, relevant and profitable wherever the market moves”.

Muñoz continued: “One opportunity we see is expanding our hybrid lineup in response to growing consumer demand. By 2030, we plan to offer more than 18 hybrids for vehicles ranging from entry-level to large luxury. This will include Genesis, starting in 2026.”

Hyundai unveiled its next-generation hybrid tech earlier this year, offering improvements in fuel efficiency and refinement. It was introduced in the Palisade SUV sold in North America, but not Europe.

We're expecting the new hybrid tech to power the next-gen Tucson midsize SUV, which is due to arrive here in 2026 and previewed in our main image (above). Hyundai will also introduce its first extender-range EV (EREV) powertrain in 2027. This uses an electric motor to drive the car's wheels and provide an electric-car-like driving experience. But for extra flexibility, a combustion engine is used to generate energy for the e-motor and battery pack, eliminating the range anxiety some drivers can experience with EVs.

ChangHwan Kim, Hyundai's head of electrification energy solutions, said that the EREV powertrain can deliver more than 600 miles of range. He added: “Unlike existing [range-extenders], Hyundai's unique system takes advantage of 15 years of hybrid and EV development experience.

Tesla Model Y Standard

SOME people say EV pioneer Tesla is faltering. Sales figures are declining worldwide and it appears interest in the brand is waning. The reasons for this may be many, but it can’t be down to the cars themselves — especially since the Americans have proven with the Model Y facelift that they aren't resting on their laurels.
