BEING ASKED TO WRITE about what shaped me as an artist felt like a bit of a trick question – not because I don’t know the answer, but because there isn’t just one. Becoming an artist felt like a wild detour, especially coming from a Model C school in Joburg, where the gravitational pull was towards medicine, law, accounting and similar paths. Fine art wasn’t exactly the obvious next step.
But looking back now, the things that shaped me weren’t dramatic turning points. They were small, almost forgettable moments that accumulated like my sculptures: tiny units building into something with form, texture and their own internal logic.
