How an inventive metal coil yielded one of the most quintessential industrial lamps of the last century
It all started with a spring. In the early 1930s, the English automotive engineer George Carwardine came up with a mechanism featuring tightly wound coils of wire that could suspend objects in space. Then he had an epiphany: Why not fix a bulb to one end, creating a flexible task lamp? When he showed the design to manufacturer Anglepoise (then called Herbert Terry & Sons), they agreed to produce it.
