Mark Grattan New York, Mexico City, & São Paulo MARKGRATTAN.COM
For two decades, Ohio-born Mark Grattan has worked primarily as a maker of collectible furniture—he was the winner of the 2021 HBO Max show Ellen’s Next Great Designer, adviser to Solange Knowles during her foray into product design, and the creator of a very sexy 1970s-inspired bed that has a cult following. “At its core, my philosophy reclaims ownership,” explains Grattan, whose clients include actor Tracee Ellis Ross and artist Simone Leigh. “I’m not just building objects, but lived worlds where design is both personal and powerful.” Accordingly, in recent years, after his own Mexico City apartment in a Luis Barragán building captured global interest, Grattan has been selectively adding interiors to his repertoire. He worked with star athletes Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird on their Manhattan pied-à-terre and is now putting the finishing touches on his Brooklyn home that will showcase several of his latest projects, including new lines for HBF Textiles and ABC Stone, and handcrafted African mahogany furnishings sporting intricate veneer marquetry. The residence is a testament to his belief that furniture should be lived with, not staged.

Lights Fantastic
Lighting sculptor Stephen White constructed more than 2,000 works over his six-decade career, at least one a staggering 18 feet tall, yet his meticulous scrapbooks contain scant evidence of public recognition. A few newspaper clippings from Hawaii and the West Coast sit next to a single national magazine cover, nearly half a century old the logo obscuring White's (uncredited) design

CUTTING A RUG
Even during Sweden's famously long and bitter-cold winter, the dining room at Beata Heuman’s 18th-century family farmhouse bursts with life thanks to the hand-painted mural of tulips, lilies, dahlias, and fruit trees—all a nod to flora on the property grounds, much of it planted by her mom. Now, the AD100 designer has teamed up with the British wall covering brand de Gournay to bring that tableau (ever so slightly tweaked) into production. Heuman says of the collaboration, which also includes Delft Folly, her riff on the classic Dutch blue-and-white tiles. degournay.com
