The Dirt on Millicompost

Learn how to use millipedes to increase soil health
Buggy soil usually brings to mind images of struggling plants overrun by aphids and fungus gnats. But not all bugs are something to agonize over. In fact, many of them are here to help. Predators such as spiders and centipedes keep pest populations in check, and insects that burrow, such as ants, aerate the soil. Most importantly, many insects recycle nutrients from dead organic matter back into the soil.
Like earthworms, millipedes are considered “cold” composters. Instead of the bacteria in the soil breaking up chunks of broccoli, it’s the bacteria in their gut. Millipede waste, known as castings, are even more nutrient-rich than earthworm composts. Studies show that plants grown with millipede castings tend to be more vigorous and produce heavier, more abundant fruit than those grown in earthworm compost. In addition to having elevated levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (NPK), millipede castings are rich in micronutrients such as calcium and magnesium. Their near-neutral pH and excellent moisture retention capacity makes them a great addition to potting mixes.
