She’s rarely seen without a smile and comes across as one of the most composed presenters on television, yet Ruth Langsford admits that just like the rest of us, she can’t help but worry about the odd lump, bump and line.

Similarly, when she gets together with her girlfriends, there’s the usual chorus of complaints about who has gained weight and who looks their age.

“So many people on television are a lot younger than me and very skinny and you end up comparing yourself, so when you do a job like this you become very self-critical,” Ruth 58, says.

“But when I’m with my girlfriends, we all look like this – we’re normal sized. None of my friends have had Botox and so we’ve all got lines and we all get together and go, ‘I’m so fat’, ‘oh, I’m so fat too’, ‘oh, we’re so tired and exhausted and going through the menopause,’ so we all talk about the same things.”
