THE DATE: 7 JANUARY 1981
After the glory years of the early 1970s, we were just starting to become a force in the English game once again and the 1980/81 season saw the start of another wonderful spell in our history.
Bill Nicholson had led us to League Cup wins in 1971 and 1973, with a UEFA Cup triumph sandwiched in between but the tide turned against us in the latter part of that decade and we had to endure a season in the Second Division during 1977/78, before an immediate return to the top flight. With Keith Burkinshaw now in charge, we went into the 1980/81 campaign with a squad that was starting to gel together – the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa, Steve Perryman and Chris Hughton joined by summer signings Steve Archibald and Garth Crooks.
