Chris Froome may want to make hay while the sun shines in France this July, because going on Simon Yates’s domination of the Giro from the first mountain stage until the final few days, there is a new, very credible pretender to the Sky man’s status as the rider to beat.
The 25-year-old Mitchelton-Scott rider looked understandably underwhelmed as he rolled into Cervinia in the grupetto on Saturday, flanked by team-mates and wearing the blue king of the mountains jersey that Froome had taken from him — along with the pink — the previous day.
