Fun With Vedic Maths
January 2022
|The Vedanta Kesari
In the early twentieth century, Jagadguru Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha, the Shankaracharya of Govardhana Math, Puri, who was a great scholar expounded the Vedic texts on mathematics called Ganita Sutras and compiled his research in 16 sutras and 13 sub sutras, giving us an efficient system of mental calculations. Starting from this issue we present a fun series based on these sutras from Vedic Mathematics. It is well known that Vedic Mathematics develops self-awareness, mind power, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The sutras are pertinent in real life scenarios as well.

During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, Vedanth went to stay with his grandparents at the temple town of Kanchipuram. Though he missed his school friends, attending classes online from far away was fun. His new classmate was his grandfather! He would now and then sit beside Vedanth and listen to the teacher!
It was evening and Vedanth was sitting with a worried look.
Grandpa: Vedanth, what happened? Are you not enjoying your stay here?
Vedanth: No Thatha, I love being here. But next week I have maths exam. And I don’t feel like studying at all. I think I’ll surely fail. Maths is such a difficult subject and so boring. What a problem!
Grandpa: Complexities of problems are simplified with the very first step — the intent to solve!
