An evolutionary update this may be, but the new create-a-team mode gives the superlative career mode of last year’s F1 2019 an even more personal feel. When you can trace the chain of cause and effect from lifting off R2 into practice session corners through to signing Lewis Hamilton as your team-mate, it’s plain to see: this is an exquisite example of game design.
It starts with a surprising inclusion. In creating your team, you choose a team mate from a list of F2 drivers, which includes the late Anthoine Hubert. It’s a touching tribute, but feels strange.
The depth of the improved career mode is wonderful, even if the fundamental gameplay remains unchanged. It just feels even more organic, with new interview scenes and simple but powerful resource management as you fill your calendar with development choices.
