Claire Gillo speaks to the Student Sony World Photo Awards 2019 winner, who is from Spain, about his award and aspirations for the future
Tell us more about yourself and how you got into photography.
My interest in photography came about as a result of visiting several exhibitions. One in particular that stood out was the World Press Photo in Valencia. I was inspired by how the professional photographers could tell a story with images, so I directed my studies towards this area. On my course I learnt all about analogue photography, and my curiosity and desire increased. Today, I am in a continuous process of development, and am studying a degree in Audiovisual Communication at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón, where I am preparing to take the final course.
How did it feel to win the 2019 Student Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photo Awards?
It was a great surprise! When I entered my first series I never thought that I would win the contest. Just being among the ten finalists was a real honour. I already felt like I was a winner to be able to live that experience. As a result of the selection as a finalist I received some job offers, so for my career it has been a great leap. Now all that remains is to work hard and take advantage of everything that comes.

How was the award ceremony in London?
