Managing Itchy Scalp In Children
January 2017
|Parent Circle
Worried your child is constantly scratching his head? Is it dandruff or ring worm infection or some other serious bacterial condition? Our expert brings you a 360-degree perspective on causes and remedies.
Four-year-old Aryan’s parents have recently noticed that their son has developed the habit of scratching his scalp frequently. They examine his scalp carefully, but do not find any apparent cause. They try some over-the-counter medicated shampoos to relieve the itch, but the condition persists. Soon enough, Aryan’s continued scratching causes visible enlargement of the lymph nodes on the back of his neck. His worried parents are left with no choice but to seek medical help. Ironically, Aryan does not have any significant medical problems. His parents have always ensured that he follows good habits of hygiene. Then what is the root cause of Aryan’s itchy scalp?
Almost 50% of children experience an itchy scalp at some point during their childhood. A chronic itchy scalp, if left untreated, may cause significant distress to both children and parents. To understand this condition better and manage it effectively, parents need to know the exact cause behind it. This is the first step towards a successful treatment. Of course, a consultation with a dermatologist is necessary for arriving at the correct diagnosis.
COMMON CAUSES OF ITCHY SCALP
• Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis
• Psoriasis
• Fungal infection called tinea capitis or ringworm
DANDRUFF AND SEBORRHOEIC DERMATITIS
The precise cause for dandruff is not yet known. It may be due to an abnormal immune response to a type of yeast present on the scalp or a genetic condition.
