PLYMOUTH'S Derriford Hospital is celebrating as a much-valued staff member has made the shortlist for Oncology Nurse of the Year.
Rachel Bryce has been recognized by the British Journal of Nursing Awards for her excellent work in improving the nursing care of acute oncology patients.
Prior to September 2019, acute oncology patients faced delays to telephone enquiries for specialist chemotherapy advice. Determined to improve patient experience, in 2020 Rachel and her dedicated team established a single phone number, staffed predominantly by the specialist acute oncology team, to try to solve the issue. It meant that patients could call directly for the specialist advice that they require.
Speaking after receiving the news, Rachel said she felt as the recognition was not only for her but her team. She told how she could not do her job without the five nurses, one health care assistant and an 'incredible' administrator.
