Despite winning gold at Military Games, Shivpal rues missing Tokyo qualifying mark

The season couldn’t have ended on a brighter note for javelin thrower Shivpal Singh, who just became the first Indian track and field athlete to grab a gold at the ongoing 7th CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China on Thursday.

While the social media has gone on to praise the 24-year-old javelin thrower for his accomplishment, Shivpal reckoned he missed on his ultimate aim to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which made this medal taste less sweeter.

Clinching the gold with a throw of 83.33m, Shivpal missed the Olympic qualifying standard of 85m. The Haryana athlete will now have to at least wait till the start of the new season to book his spot in the quadrennial event on merit.
