Armed with a new putter and a new grip, I’m excited to be heading back to Augusta National next month.

It’s that time of year when my thoughts start to drift towards the Masters. We’ve been starved of major championship golf for the best part of eight months, since the PGA Championship last August, so the anticipation for the season’s first major is always a little more intense than for the other three, which come along in quick succession during the summer.

For me, a large part of that anticipation is created by the emotional attachment you develop with the tournament over the years – not just as a player but as a fan and spectator. I have some great memories of watching the Masters at home with my family growing up, but it’s the BBC theme music that stands out most in my mind when I cast my mind back. I actually hummed it to the Golf World editor when we were talking on the phone about the subject for this column but he assured me it wouldn’t translate well on the page! I’m sure you know the tune I’m talking about, though.
