An Eye For Goal

Cenk Tosun has come to ‘big club’ Everton to score goals. And, judging by the proven striker’s pedigree, it’s easy to see why the Club’s new January signing is eager to get going with the Blues

- Paul McNamara

An Eye For Goal

Cenk Tosun generally conveys his message via the medium of goals.

He announced himself at Besiktas by heading the only goal of the match on his debut against Mersin IY.

Tosun bade farewell to the supporters who idolised him by scoring with his left foot in a 4-1 Turkish Cup demolition of Osmanlispor last month.

This is how Tosun rolls. He scored six times in his first six professional starts – for Gaziantepspor in Turkey – his goals coming off either foot and with his head. And, in the same period, he teed up strike partner Ismael Sosa for the finish which slayed the giants of Galatasaray.

What’s more, Tosun’s first goal for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Under-19 team came on only his second start – and against their Bayern Munich counterparts.

Sam Allardyce, then, has good reason for describing his new signing as a footballer of some pedigree.

Tosun is talking to Everton magazine with the ink still drying on a deal committing him to Goodison Park for the next four-and-a-half years.

He is visibly thrilled to be here. Tosun reverts to his broken English only once, revealing

he is “too much excited” about joining Everton, and wants to meet his new club’s fans “as soon as possible”.

For the remainder of the interview, Tosun answers in Turkish. His chance to communicate through his shooting boots will come soon enough.

For now, he wants to ensure nothing is lost in translation.

He needs Evertonians to know how he appreciates the size of the Club and its “meaningful history”.
