Most visitors to the city flock to the gentrified, touristy areas but why not take the path less trodden?
Like many cities with a large ethnic Chinese community, Ho Chi Minh City – more popularly known as Saigon by the locals – has one to call its own, too. Known as Cholon, which means “big market”, it sits in District 5, on the west side of the Saigon River.
Home to the local Chinese
Saigon is a rapidly growing city of 8.5 million people and 6 million motorcycles. It’s made up of 19 urban districts, with District 1 being the skyscraper-dotted urban centre. There is a popular local saying that goes: “Eat in District 5, Live in District 3, and See in District 1.” By opting to stay in Cholon, we discovered that it’s possible to do all three in District 5!
Cholon doesn’t look like the typical condensed Chinatown you’d find in Bangkok, London or New York City. It’s a large area spread out over the western half of District 5 and spilling into District 6, so you won’t immediately realise that you’ve sauntered into Chinatown until you’re in the thick of it. In fact, there is no clear sign of where it starts or ends.
