Cosmopolitan Sri Lanka|July 2018

Don't Freak Out About The Fall Out!

Generally, doctors claim that everybody loses approximately 100 strands of hair every day. The moment this number increases drastically or if there’s little or no regrowth – now that’s when you’re going to start freaking out. But before you do that, let’s just take a more magnified look into the actual fallout.

THE REASONS

It’s In Your Genes! Unfortunately, hair fall may be caused by a genetic predisposition that causes hair follicles to be sensitive to male hormones (androgens), which would then result in the follicle shrinking and producing finer, shorter hairs.

Actions and Reactions For some, your genes may be rooting for you but your hair’s responding badly to something to do with your lifestyle or diet.

THE TRIGGERS

Oestrogen vs. Androgen Our hormones play a large role in a lot of different aspects of our bodies, from mood swings to weight to acne. They even regulate our hair growth cycles. To understand this better, let’s look at the technical side of things. Oestrogen (female hormones) pushes for hair growth, whilst androgen tends to shorten the cycle of hair growth. The reason behind this could be due to endocrine malfunctions caused by things like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), but it ultimately boils down to your genetic predisposition. Seeing a doctor ASAP is highly recommended in a situation like this.
