Hasmita Amtha rounds up what’s hot for braais

Let's BRAAI

Come rain, come shine, the braai must go on. This is true to our South African lifestyle and commitment to the humble braai that is not only a means of food preparation, but an event most of us savour.

With the pandemic, and to minimise its devastating effects, staying home has led to many home owners equipping themselves for the ultimate braai experience. Add to this the frustrations of load shedding, and fires are the way to go right now. If you’re looking to upgrade your braai, here’s all you need to know.

LEVEL UP

According to Malcolm Sims of Firefox, outdoor cooking has been taken up a notch with the variety of equipment available. “Clients are buying braais with all the bells and whistles. Typical features include spit motors and shafts to enable rotisserie cooking; warming grids to keep food warm or heat up bread; pans to do breakfasts, seafood or stir-fries; stainless steel warming pans to keep cooked food warm and carry it to the table in a stylish serving dish.”

Moving away from the usual black built-in braai, home owners have more of a choice available.

Sims says: “The plain black built-in braai is a thing of the past. Firefox offers a range of braais made from steel. Many of our clients will take a stainless steel exterior on the braai for that swisher look, or a braai in either complete 304 or 316 stainless steel in coastal areas where corrosion is a concern.”
