Home That Heroes Open-Plan Multifunctional Design

Form follows function – this is a design rule that influences contemporary open-plan living.

We’ve seen this defining architectural guideline applied to most new and renovated homes featuring multifunctional spaces: be it the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room area or the master bedroom with en suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

Speaking to industry experts, we take a look at the trends and considerations of multifunctional open-plan living.

THE ARCHITECTURAL ANGLE

Contemporary residential architecture has made a strong move towards more open-plan spaces, both indoors and out. Elaborating on trends, professional architect Antoinette Horngren of JK Designs says: “As people are spending more time at home, we have noticed an increase in requests for multifunctional spaces.

“Even though we are living in a time of social isolation, clients are yearning for a future where they can entertain again.”

The entertainer’s home always has numerous spaces to socialise within, most of which are open-plan or connected to each other, says Horngren. “As a result of beautiful weather and our social culture, we foresee that the biggest trend locally will be open-plan living areas that seamlessly flow onto a large patio. This creates the inside-outside living that South Africans adore.”
