Shruti grew up in a family of art collectors, and has been surrounded by fine art and design from her childhood. She studied Business Administration at The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and worked on projects for multiple Fortune 500 clients at the New England Consulting Group. However, design always remained her first love and she made the transition by studying interior design at the Parsons School of Design in New York, and a training stint with the design firm Tony Chi & Associates, also in New York. She then returned to Bengaluru and worked with local architects before founding MAIA Design. Straddling the world of business and design with ease, she has been able to integrate the branding and business objectives of her clients into the design solution. She tells us that the work ethic at MAIA demands detailed explorations in material, study of human behaviour, and collaborations with artists, chefs and homeowners to create unique immersive ‘experiences’. Each project is unique and tailored to the client and their requirements.
When and how did you know that design was your calling?
Growing up, I was always drawn to both the creative and the analytical. I was brought up in a Marwari business household and was surrounded by beautiful objects, as my grandfather was an art collector. Not entirely sure what career I should pursue, I studied finance for my undergrad and worked for a management consulting firm. Obsessed with design, I used to teach myself software on the weekends and create imaginary briefs for clients. One day in NYC, I decided that if I didn’t go to design school at that point in time, I never would. So I took the plunge, and there was no looking back.
