Nothing says evolved, confident style quite like the considered use of pattern and colour. Interior designer Greg Natale shows us how to pull it off…

PATTERN PLAY

COASTAL PLAID

“I’ve always loved plaid. Growing up in the Seventies, I remember watching Vivienne Westwood rock the fashion world with her punk-inspired plaid creations. From the moment I began the design for this coastal gem, I knew plaid would feature, but only in blue – and a bright blue at that. The Beach Boys famously dressed in blue plaid Pendleton shirts, ensuring that this memorable fabric would forever be associated with surf and sun.”

SQUARE UP

“You can take a subtle approach like here, where square panels on the ceiling reference the grids of the graphic blue wallpaper on a larger scale. Varying sizes of repetitive shapes builds up layers of pattern, while pieces of furniture lend their own structure to the scheme, such as the legs of the dining chairs. Steps covered in three different Spanish Revivalthemed tile designs add another dimension to the room.”
