All successful kitchens, whether top of the range or budget basic, have one thing in common: they’re efficient.
Far more important than sleek finishes or high-end appliances or the latest gadgets is a layout that suits the user. If there’s a place for everything, enough space to carry out daily tasks, and the key tools are close to hand, everything – prepping, cooking and even cleaning up afterwards – becomes a pleasure rather than a chore.
Too little space and you might struggle to squeeze in all that’s required for a fully functional kitchen. But too much space can be just as difficult to work with. That was the issue facing Murray & Murray at this home in rural Fife. Its proportions were generous – 5.5m wide and fully 15m long. Trying to fill all of that space would not just have resulted in a lot of redundant cupboards, but the fridge, hob and sink would have been too far apart, with time and energy wasted traipsing between them.
