‘Byredo’ is derived from the word ‘redolence’, which means ‘pleasant (often evocative) fragrance’, and the brand’s Swedish founder, Ben Gorham, a rather unconventional perfumer with tattoos and a former career as a basketballer, creates scents based on personal memories. Having already made its way into upmarket department stores in the US and Hong Kong, Byredo’s flagship store sells the full range, including scented candles and accessories as well as perfumes.
