Photographer Johnny Miller depicts the journeys that weave through our cities – and only scratch the surface of our stories.
The close-up will always have its place in showing moments and emotions of the human experience, but a zoomed-out perspective allows a single image to make a compelling argument. In Unequal Scenes, the series of photos that made waves around the world when they appeared on the cover of Time in May this year, photographer Johnny Miller caught and held the attention of those on both sides of the ‘privilege’ argument. Seen from a drone, the homes and swimming pools of Johannesburg’s sprawling suburbs allowed no room for argument when seen beside the much littler plots in a neighboring township. Exceptions aside, some divisions remained as tangible as they had been during apartheid.
