Streamlining an awkward space into a smoothly-functioning office for his firm DPA Design Studio, Ahmedabad-based interior designer Dhaval Patel plays with materials and textures to create varied aesthetic experiences as markers of his design capabilities.

For a designer, designing their own space is not markedly different from creating for others. There’s no running away from requirements, for one — in this case, their own. But what is appreciably different, is freedom of choice. This then, was interior designer Dhaval Patel’s situation when he decided to shift his flourishing practice — DPA Design Studio, established in 2009 — to a larger premise which would allow him and his team to work in a segregated yet concerted manner (the earlier office didn’t have the requisite compartmentalization). “It is wonderful when the designer becomes his own client — he can reflect on his own taste, and has no limitations and any sort of restrictive decisions,” says the 29-year-old, who has obtained both his graduate and post-graduate degrees in interior design.
