When candle maker Enoch William Beard arrived in Sydney in the late 1880s from Manchester with his pregnant wife Martha and their four children, he swiftly spotted an opportunity to provide for his growing family. Employed to meet the ships arriving from England and direct new arrivals to their homes, Enoch noticed that while they came with clothes, crockery, and furniture, none brought bedding. “When Enoch came to Australia he saw that immigrants were arriving only with suitcases full of smaller items,” says his great-grandson Garry Beard.
