Travelling During Pregnancy
February 2017

Women often take special care once they conceive. It's a myth that travelling, especially long distance, is a strict no-no and so are vacations. Armed with precautionary measures, medical assistance, sound advice, and a little bit of planning, the road to the destination will surely be as smooth as it can be.

Short distance travelling
Short distance journeys pose no threat to pregnant women. There is a general misconception that if the roads are uneven or if there are any bumps and potholes, it can negatively impact the pregnancy. This is a myth. Car driving or travelling in cabs and auto rickshaws is safe so long as the woman doesn't meet with an accident. They must wear seatbelt in cars.
Long distances: yes or no?
Long distance traveling via buses is not advisable because the mother-to-be is often cooped up in one place for long hours. This accelerates the risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where blood clots develop in the veins and can cause pain or swelling. The same goes for lengthy flight journeys as well. The expectant mother can opt for train journeys or flights where she can walk around and stretch her legs. In flights opt for aisle seat to get more leg space.
