Suicide is one of the major problems that is emerging today affecting the youth and is the third leading cause of death among youth from the age 1524. The increasing socio economic situations, cultural transitions, globalization etc are some of the common causes of it. Estimates for number of suicides in India vary. For example, one study projected 187,000 suicides in India in 2010, while official data by the Government of India claims 134,600 suicides in 2010. According to National Crime Record Bureau (Government of India, 2010) Bangalore is the suicidal capital of India with 1,778 cases. 15 suicides are committed every hour. 70% of suicide victims in India are married people. West Bengal comes at the second place in suicide cases Youth who are the backbone of India and are said to be the lead the nation to advancement are experiencing more pressure and stress which are making them vulnerable to attempt suicide. The common methods used for committing suicide are using organic fertilizers (poisoning, 36.6%), hanging (32.1%) and self-immolation (7.9%) The causes of suicide vary from situation to situation. In India, high expectations from the parents, not getting good marks in the examination, lack of emotional support from the family, relationship issues, abuse and neglect, stress regarding the choice of the carrier, death of dear ones, failure in examination. But one important issue that a youth faces today is pressure from the parents to get high grades in their board examination especially in class 12 so that they can get admission in good colleges like IIT and IIM. The clash of values within families is also an important factor for young people in their lives.
