COVID-19 & HbA1c
August - September 2020
|Diabetes Health
Dr Binayak Sinha discusses with Diabetes Health team how a rise in both HbA1c and Diabetes-related complications are seen with increasing duration of the pandemic.
A research article was published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. The article was authored by Dr Samit Ghosal, Dr Binayak Sinha, Dr Milan Majumder and Dr Anoop Misra.
Highlights of the study
This is probably the first study to highlight that there is an increment in both the HbA1c as well as diabetes-related complications with increasing duration of mobility restriction.
Social movement restrictions imposed, though necessary in an attempt to preventing the spread of the virus, may adversely impact both Diabetes control and associated complications by putting a restriction on the available resources.
Annualized rates of HbA1c increment and Diabetes-related complication are projected to increase in proportion to the duration of restriction (in days).
