Into the bog or into the water
Bold and tropical-looking Colocasia esculenta ‘White Lava’ is a clumping elephant’s ear with a tuberous root system and magnificent heart-shaped, large leaves each with a striking creamy-white central vein radiating outwards like a web into its side veins. The tall leaf stems are dark purple, glossy and smooth. This large plant (90 x 120cm) loves boggy, compost-enriched soil which is slightly acidic, and will even grow in standing water 15cm deep. It likes morning sun and will tolerate shade and being a heavy feeder, some slow-releasing fertiliser in summer. Indoor plant parents can grow it in ever-moist soil in a spot with bright light.
