As founder of womenswear label Me+Em, CLARE HORNBY, 49, knows a thing or two about getting ahead
Anything is possible with determination
Even from an early age, I wanted to be self-employed and earn my own money – I ran a market stall as a teenager, then funded myself through university. When I cofounded Me+Em 10 years ago, I was working in advertising and Emma [Howarth, Hornby’s co-founder, who left the business in 2012] and I remortgaged our homes to make it happen. We’d found a gap in the market for a label that behaves like a luxury brand – designing everything in-house and focusing on quality – but with high-end high-street prices. I firmly believe anything is possible if you’re determined enough.
