Gerry may be the baby of the Durrell family but he turns 13 this week, and his well-meaning mother, Louisa, throws a classic children’s party to celebrate. A mosquito swarm forces the birthday do to be held indoors, then, when it finally gets going, there’s pass the-parcel, cheese on sticks and even some four-legged guests. But Gerry is not amused by such childishness.
