What causes pigmentation?
THE SUN
When the sun’s rays enter the skin, melanin production is triggered as this is how the skin protects itself. This can result in the development of dark patches and spots.
ACNE
When you squeeze or pop a pimple it inflames the area and bacteria can get in. After the inflamed area heals, it can leave a scar and discolouration.
HORMONES
During pregnancy, certain parts of a woman’s body, such as the stomach and neck, can become darker. Certain contraceptives can also cause darkening of the skin.
Preventing pigmentation
One of the most common causes of pigmentation is exposure to the sun, so your first line of defence is sunscreen. This will help to prevent the sun’s rays from entering the skin and triggering melanin production.
