Animal Magic - Derek Gow And Water Voles

As a small boy in Scotland, Derek Gow would fish for minnows with his brother.
‘My earliest memory is seeing a pair of water voles fighting and rolling down the bank towards us. Two scared little boys ran back to their parents!’
Little did he know his life’s work would be saving the endangered native mammal. ‘I was setting up a British wildlife zoo in 1994. We wanted to have water voles but knew nothing about them. We had to learn how to find them, catch them, everything.’
Britain’s largest voles live in linked burrows along rivers and took Mr. Gow by surprise with some of their habits.
