NICKY HANCOCK explores the work of Bath artist Carole Waller

FOR artist Carole Waller, a love affair with textiles drew her towards combining two of her passions - fashion and painting. Carole paints directly onto cloth using dye with paint brushes, like paint on canvas. Her skills as an artist are matched by her energy and inventive spirit and since opening her gallery in Bath, One Two Five in Abbey Green, inspiration has come from the fabric of the buildings in her neighbourhood and the rich tapestry that has woven the fascinating history of the city of Bath.

Carole spent time in Europe as a child and attributes her interest in architecture to this early induction.

“I was always interested in classism, in Greek and Roman sculpture and architecture and culture,” she says.

In 2016 Carole was influenced by the plans for the Roman Baths and the textures of the pavements above them.

Having supplied Harvey Nichols and Liberty’s in the past, Carole understands the need to keep abreast of current style trends. She loves to hear stories of client’s pieces being ‘stolen’ by their daughters proving that her clothes have longevity and wide appeal.

Last year Carole staged a charity catwalk show at Anthopologie with the girls of the Royal High School Bath as models.
