My friend Judy passed away in March. She had been ill for a few years. Her illness robbed her of so much: her physical strength. The written word. Solo hikes up Table Mountain. But it did not rob her of her courage and her compassion. Or her serenity. The last time I saw her, she was seated in her wheelchair, having brought her beloved dog Roxy Valentine to the park. I hadn’t seen her for a while, not for any reason other than my own cowardice; I could not bear to witness another loved one ravaged by cancer and I was consumed with guilt at having abandoned her. Fighting back tears, I went to her, and she, battling to walk, made her way unsteadily towards me. We held one another for a long time, not saying anything. I didn’t know what to say. “Sorry,” was all I could get out. “This feels like a journey,” she managed to say, “A long, solo journey.” It was said without recrimination. Judy was comfortable with journeys. She had taken many.
