Breaking free

2019 was the year that Phumelele found her voice and was bold enough to walk away from her unhappy marriage.

Phumelele Zungu (Ayanda Borotho) was utterly dejected and infuriated when her taxi-boss husband Mpiyakhe (Siyabonga Thwala) decided to take another wife without asking her. There’s her sister-wife Siphokazi (Celeste Ntuli) and they all get along well. So why would he want another wife? According to Mpiyakhe, he was in love with ambitious cop Sibongile (Lerato Mvesele) and he couldn’t let her go, no matter how hard he tried.

By the time the wedding day arrived in January, the wives had warmed up to the idea of sharing their husband with another woman – there wasn’t much they could do anyway. But Phumelele’s daughter Thokozani (Amina Karen-Sue Jack) could and she tore Sibongile’s wedding dress to shreds. Phumelele took the blame to protect Thokozani from the elders, but after the wedding Phumelele realised that she couldn’t stay with Mpiyakhe – she needed out and nothing would stop her.
