A whole new you

Nonka needs to make a change – and Fikile is just the person to give her one.

Nonka (Thuthuka Mthembu) is in desperate need of a new vibe. “At home she is constantly reminded of how she’s kind of amounted to nothing because she wasn’t focussed on school last year,” says Thuthuka. Nonka is fighting over her lover Sibonelo (Wiseman Mncube) with his wife Mazaza (Sphelele Mzimela). And money is, as always, tight. “It’s a trying time. As a young person, you don’t always have clarity,” explains Thuthuka.

But girl, it’s makeover time! In late March salon boss Fikile (Nelisa Mchunu) decides that her employee Nonka will be the perfect bait to lure in clientele once Fikile gives her a new look. And maybe that’s just what Nonka needs to make the future look a little brighter.

FEELING MYSELF

“She feels very pretty. It’s nothing too wild, too outside of what she’s used to. After the makeover, she now gets all this attention and it makes Sibonelo jealous when he sees all that Nonka can be. She’s peeling back the layer of being this teenager, to become this woman. She is coming into her own. As a woman, the second you get to look good, it’s always a bit of a boost.”
