Who goes there?

Madonna fell in love with the city when she took her son, David Banda, to train at a Lisbon football academy. Now she owns and lives in an 18th-century palace near the city. And hot couple Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender can’t get enough of the Portuguese capital either. They’ve also snapped up a home in the capital – maybe they’re Madge’s neighbours?! A-list approved it may be, but this city is not pretentious, so make sure you hit Lisbon ASAP.

What to do…

A long weekend is perfect for getting to grips with this cool, laid-back city but you won’t regret a longer stay if you have the time. Walk to the top of Lisbon’s highest hill to St George’s Castle for sweeping views, then wander along the cobbled streets of Bairro Alto to get a taste of local life and check out the beautiful buildings with ornate tile work.

Take a trip on one of the ancient elevators that move up and down steep parts of the city. Our fave is Ascensor da Glória, dating back to 1885. Glória will take you from the garden of São Pedro de Alcântara to Restauradores Square without you having to climb the 18-degree slope, phew!
