This weck, Marvel's swinging A-lister returns to the big screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Yes, It's another reboot, but its star, Tom Holand, says his Spidey is very different form the previous versions played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. For Starters, the web-slinger is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe...
Feel free to disagree, but one of the coolest moments in Captain America: Civil War is the airport battle sequence between Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America. Long story short: When the Star- Spangled Avenger refuses to give himself in to the authorities, Iron Man is forced to call in the cavalry (“Underoos!”) — in the form of Spider- Man (Tom Holland).
Like Wonder Woman’s cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the web-slinger’s walk-on was absolutely bonkers.
It’s about time Spider-Man, Marvel’s crown jewel, takes his rightful place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Finally. But why has it taken him this long to swing by, so to speak? (Another question: Wasn’t it kinda reckless for Iron Man to enlist an untested superhero — a teenager, no less — for a potentially dangerous mission? Just saying.)
In the comics world, crossovers are a common occurrence, but in the movies, it’s a lot more complicated. Take Spider-Man for instance. Way before Marvel started bankrolling its own films via Marvel Studios, the comic book company had licensed out the Wall-crawler’s movie rights — and that of 900 characters in the Spidey-verse — to Sony Pictures. (Elsewhere, 20th Century Fox got its hands on the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties.)
“Can we expect Sony and Marvel Studios to reach a détente and pool their resources together and have the likes of Spider-Man and Iron Man sharing the same cinematic arena?” 8 DAYS once quizzed Avid Arad, the producer of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, back in 2014, when he was here on a promotional tour alongside cast members Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx.
