Multimodal Biometrics: The Way Ahead

The Japanese tech major, NEC has proven its mettle in the field of biometric identification and has made a significant contribution to India’s national identification system too by developing a largescale biometrics system which is the centerpiece of Aadhaar. Katsumi Emura, Chief Technology Officer, NEC Corporation talks about the new tech offerings from the company and discusses some of the opportunities lying ahead for the company in India. Excerpt:

Could you tell us about the things that NEC is focusing on at present?

We are currently undergoing a major transformation journey at NEC. Although NEC is known as a product company, due to the current changes in the business scenario, we are transforming ourselves and focusing more on value creation. NEC has a history of making computing and communication products, but recently we have started focusing on artificial intelligence, and image recognition as well. NEC is very strong at facial recognition tech and we are utilizing that to contribute to many industries and governments.

As the CTO of the company, I will certainly be looking at new and emerging technologies and how they can enrich the solutions portfolio for our customers. But, we are not competing with IT companies like Amazon or Google. We, instead are focusing on our core areas of competencies and expertise and using some of their platforms to provide our solutions like public safety, retail, and logistics solution, etc.

What are the new opportunities ahead for NEC in India and how do you plan to leverage them?
