In Pursuit Of The Perfect Partner

As I was going through my Facebook news feed, I chanced upon yet another dose of wedding photographs.

This time a 22-year-old friend of mine had gotten married to her longtime boyfriend. While I was scrolling through the photographs there was only one thought in my mind, why are people in such a rush to get married? During another Facebook safari (because you never know what you might come across), I noticed that a junior of mine had tied the knot too. Fresh out of college and all of just 21, the naive and fragile girl posed for “candid” photographs with zeal. Over the past couple of years, I have been the unobtrusive witness to many marriages – all thanks to Facebook. A majority of young people marry in haste and repent it later as they start to realise the fact that their partner was not the best choice for them. Marriage has always been treated as a goalpost and changing one’s status from ‘single’ to ‘happily married’ is equivalent to being settled. Thus, it is not strange that so many people flock towards this institution. When I asked a few people why they wanted to get married, without taking a second’s pause, they said that it is necessary to get married. Since childhood, we are conditioned to believe this. Hence, most people give into either societal or parental pressure and end up getting married for all the wrong reasons.
