Tom Wiggin and his extensively refurbished Sunseeker Superhawk 50 join the Our Boats fleet

Many of you will remember reading an article in this publication in late 2018 about an eccentric, possibly unbalanced individual who rather than buying a new boat had bought and then fully rebuilt a 2002 Sunseeker Superhawk 50 with triple Yanmar 420s and Trimax fixed surface drives. Well, three summers since that rebuild I can report that the boat is going well and is much admired.

At a glance, rebuilding or refitting an older boat has its obvious advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side you get to make the changes that most suit you, on the downside you can only go so far and can’t alter the look or style of a possibly dated vessel. In money terms too, there is a consideration as to whether the finished vessel is worth the sum of the cost of the rebuild.
