The Best Places To Ride Around The World
October 2019
|Motorcycle Sport & Leisure
From winding mountain passes to wild, remote plains, here are some of the highlights of what planet Earth has to offer the travelling motorcyclist.
-
There is a whole lot of world out there, waiting to be ridden and explored. Whether you’re looking for that perfect mountain pass, or a remote gravel trail, here are some of the best places around the globe that you can take a two-wheeled trip to.

1 FOR OTHER-WORLDLY SCENERY
There are so many places to choose from here, but for combining good riding with unreal landscapes, it’s hard to beat the Dong Van Karst plateau in northern Vietnam. Layers of unique pointy mountains stack themselves against the skyline, stretching off into the distance. The landscape there looks like a scene from the movie Avatar; if a mountain floated by 400 feet in the air, you wouldn’t be at all surprised. When you do reach a town, you’ll rarely see English written or spoken; everything is in Vietnamese. Getting by with pointing and sign language only adds to the feeling of being somewhere truly remote, truly alien. Winding through this sensory overload is a network of tight, twisting roads, tortured into challenging hairpins up and around the terrain. The free-spirited Vietnamese driving standards take some getting used to, but it’s worth dodging the occasional truck to ride in this incredible environment.

BUMBLE BEE BRILLIANCE
The range of models in Triumph's entry level 400cc category has been expanded with a bike that stylistically sits a little truer to the 'Scrambler' epithet.

CORRECT MIXTURE
Back in the thrilling days when major factories duked it out for the promo bennies of winning the Daytona 200, it was fascinating to walk along pit lane during practice, seeing the bikes and their technologies close-up.

Some Like it Hot All about heated clothing
Being cold on a motorcycle isn't just unpleasant, it's potentially dangerous! The human body is designed to maintain a stable internal temperature of around 37°c. When it drops by just a couple of degrees, hypothermia starts to kick in, causing symptoms including shivering, mild confusion, lack of coordination/fumbling hands and drowsiness. None of which help you control a bike. And that's only mild hypothermia!

Test fleet: Honda NT1100 DCT ES
As another chunk of monthly mileage takes my NT1100 over the 10,000-mile mark, I assess my current and future relationship with it. Overall, the Honda gets a good score, with a similar vote coming from a fellow owner.

CTL MOTOR COMPANY, CAFÉ AND MOTORCYCLE COLLECTION
In full swing since its opening just over a year ago, the Cotswolds-based CTL café, with its unique bike collection, is an unusual attraction in this part of the country. Whether you just want a quick break and a cheap cuppa, or spend more time dining and browsing through its special selection of rare classic road and race bikes, CTL near Cirencester is well worth a look.
