As I write this, the first of my new regular column for LRO, I’m just about to set off to a motor show so it seemed appropriate to record some of the more memorable shows I attended in my Land Rover career.
Frankfurt was the scene of the launch of the original Freelander in 1997. A cavalcade of Land Rovers was to escort the new model into the hall but, as the lead vehicle entered, the power failed – giving the Freelander the dubious distinction of debuting in darkness. Given the shaky relationship with BMW, the Rover Group’s parent company, deliberate sabotage was immediately suspected.
