If you were hoping that this issue might buck the trend, then I’m sorry, but you’re about to be disappointed. Or pleased, of course, depending on your view of 2-strokes.
As I have documented previously, the main problem with 2-strokes is the amount of pollution they put out, due to the fact that the lubricating oil is burnt with the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber. Therefore, new systems have tried to separate the lubrication from the combustible charge.
Whereas it might appear to be up to the larger manufacturers with the resources to develop new technology (see the story on the Kawasaki design in the August issue), there are, as always, some clever boffins out there, beavering independently away to the same ends.
